The Wire: The Musical

Funny or Die gives us "The Wire: The Musical."

Funny or Die gives us “The Wire: The Musical.”

Despite featuring Michael Kenneth Williams, Sonja Sohn, Larry Gillard Jr., Andre Royo & Felicia “Snoop” Pearson reprising their roles from The Wire, it’s actually not that funny.

Apparently, it’s not just me. Slate’s David Haglund:

When David Simon expressed concern that people were discussing The Wire without the seriousness that the show demanded, he probably did not imagine that many of the actors he worked with closely for five years were about to poke fun at the beloved series through a musical parody. And as a serious fan of the show, I confess that moments in this goofy four-minute video made me pretty uncomfortable.

What elevates it, though, are the surprising turns from the show’s original regulars (Felicia “Snoop” Pearson shines in her brief scene)—some of whom, one suspects, have tired of being associated entirely with one role. (Calling all casting directors.) And that Season 1 scene around the chess board, while beautifully done, was a little heavy-handed.

It’s all in the lame, yo.
