(Vice) Presidential

Via Politico, Pence shows Trump how to sweat it out with Texas victims:

Pence — who is always cautious about upstaging the president — literally followed in Trump’s footsteps, flying with his wife to Corpus Christi, Texas, two days after the president and first lady Melania Trump had flown there and received updates from officials on the response effort to Hurricane Harvey, which made landfall late last Friday.

But while Trump courted controversy by barely mentioning the victims and boasting about the crowds who greeted him, his No. 2 took a more classic approach to offering comfort in the wake of a widespread natural disaster.

This is the second time lately that Pence has taken on a task we would typically expect a president to undertake.  The other was his recent tour of Latin America.

  1. Pence seems to be doing his best to fly under the radar.

    @Doug Mataconis:

    He pretty much as to do that, hasn’t he? If he gets better publicity than Trump–easy to do, certainly–Baby Huey will get very, very angry. Trump can’t fire Pence, but surely try to make life miserable for him in retaliation. Nobody upstages Baby Huey. Nobody.

  3. CSK says:

    Now that I’ve read the linked Politico article, I can see that it could enrage Trump to the point that he might just try to fire Pence. And then get even more enraged when Kelly carefully explains to him that…he…can’t…do…that.

    Practice, practice, practice.

  5. James Pearce says:

    We’ll never see Trump doing any physical labor, even for a photo op. Melania gives the “honey do” list directly to the staff.

    @CSK: LOL.

  7. Hal_10000 says:

    The pattern of this Presidency has, so far, been Trump blundering around like a enraged toddler and then the professionals — Mattis, Pence, Haley — following after him to apologize for him and clean up the mess.

    @Hal_10000: So what you’re saying is they are high priced nannies?
