We’re Back!

Our server went kaput. We got a new one.

blogging-people

Dave Schuler emailed me Thursday evening to notify me that OTB wasn’t loading for him. After a few minutes of fiddling on my end, I submitted a trouble ticket to our site host and they informed me we had a massive hardware failure. They moved our files to a new machine overnight but  they don’t do the backend work needed to actually get the site up and running and, alas, the guy who handles that sort of thing for me was indisposed and then ran into some fairly major technical issues.

If you’re reading this, the domain is pointing to the new server now and hopefully ready for us to start writing and you to start commenting again. Let us know if you notice anything broken.

Huzzah! Glad it was not a denial of service attack.

I had a passing thought that the continued common sense approach and factual based discussions could have upset those who have a problem with that.

    🙂

Thank heavens. I was about to ask for my money back.

    Welcome back.

Just curious. Does it save significantly doing your site this way rather than hosting it with a service that handles all this hardware stuff? Not necessarily a blog hosting service but rather a software/app one that will host you on a virtual machine and fail over to a new one in a second or two if there is ever a problem.

So glad you’re back! I missed you all!

Every guy suffers a hardware failure sooner or later. Part of the aging process. Or so I’ve heard.

@MarkedMan: I was paying much more for a full service, all bells and whistles service from Rackspace for three years or so and it was actually much worse. We were failing all the time. We recovered more quickly from a hardware failure there but lost a couple days worth of posts (which I was able to manually recover from the RSS cache).

It was mostly just an odd bit of bad luck timing-wise, with my server guy out of town and without connectivity beyond his phone and the odd coffee shop.

Dear Dr. Joyner, Mr. Mataconis, Esq, and Dr. Taylor, et. al:

Glad you’re all back. You are all a part of my daily routine, even on the weekends, so when you’re gone, it feels like something is off in the earth’s tilt.

    So….

    Thank you.
