Which Republicans Will Support Same-Sex Marriage Next?

With Rob Portman and Mark Kirk now on board as supporting same-sex marriage, National Journal has an interesting piece discussing which Republicans might be next to join them.

It’s an interesting read, and I’ve got to say I was surprised to see Kelly Ayotte’s name in the mix. Yes, she’s a New England Republican from a state where same-sex marriage is legal, but he’s also been generally identified with the conservatives in the Senate. If she did change positions on the issue, it would be something of a big deal. Beyond her, the obvious candidates are Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins. I see little prospect that either of the “long shots” — Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin — will be willing to jump on this bandwagon just yet.

  1. Dave says:

Johnson likely will not support it because it doesn’t affect his donors in any way. That man has yet to think for himself or hold a position on anything that wasn’t spoon fed to him by business interests. His position on any issue during the 2010 senatorial campaign was “I don’t know, I’ll tell you when I get to Washington.”

  2. More interesting is which young Republican is going to include marriage equality in his plank the first time he runs?
