The Oklahoma City Thunder is making their second consecutive trip to the Western Conference finals after ousting the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. Naturally, rioting and gunplay ensued.

Oklahoma City police say at least eight people were shot late Monday blocks from Chesapeake Energy Arena after the NBA playoff game between the Thunder and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Capt. Dexter Nelson said some scuffles broke out in a crowd of people walking east toward the Bricktown district, a popular nightlife area.

“Some girls got into it with a group of guys, and the guys opened fire on the women,” Nelson said.

A typical night in the OKC.

Gunfight at the O.K. Corral? 😉

If it’s the Thunder’s “first trip to the Western Conference finals”, how can you state “naturally rioting and gunplay ensued”. That comment would indicate that it had occurred before. It hasn’t happened before. And for the record, it’s the Thunder’s 2nd trip to the Western Conference Finals…nice work.

@Mike Terry: It was meant to be a sarcastic commentary on the absurdity of these sort of incidents, which occur all too often in conjunction with major sporting events. I goofed on the second part, which I’ve now corrected.

“and the guys opened fire on the women”
Looks like the women brought a cat to a gunfight!

  5. Gustopher says:

When will people learn… You do not impress the ladies by shooting at them. Chicks dig guys who aren’t assaulting them with deadly weapons.

I hope the shooters get some nice long jail sentences for their trouble.

  6. Mike Terry says:

@James Joyner: I considered it might be sarcasm but considering OKC gets a bad rap on some matters, I wasn’t quite sure. My bad. Thank you.

So, why did they leave Seattle for Oklahoma City?

Oh yeah, the owner was from Oklahoma City.

  8. James Joyner says:

@al-Ameda: Didn’t Seattle refuse to buy them a new arena, while OKC happily obliged in order to get an NBA team?

  9. Mike Terry says:

@al-Ameda: Howard Schultz, the owner of Starbucks, never would have sold the team in the first place if Seattle would have bult the team a new arena. He worked with the city of Seattle for years to no avail.

Actually, it’s seven shot and a pregnant woman assaulted. One person is in critical condition. It no longer says the men opened fire on the women. They got into a shoving match and then someone opened fire. The cops say they have no idea if it had anything to do with the game.

  11. Carlton says:

@James Joyner: Actually the arena was already here in OKC before the Sonics were sold to Mr. Clay Bennett. It saddens me that you hold a PhD and serve as a professor at an institute of higher learning and can’t get simple facts straight in your “article”.
