If my old Labrador didn’t have cataracts that picture alone would have had her trying to crawl under my bed. But she’d have forgiven you and joined me in wishing you and all here a happy 4th and a safe summer.

Our last dog was a Tibetan Spaniel adopted from the pound (the vet always said, “How did she wind up there?”). The official breed description reads, “Brave to the point of stupidity.” For fireworks or thunder, she would raise her head, sort of nod for yeah, I heard that, then doze off again. The only time I ever saw her show second thoughts was when she charged across our front lawn at the two horses walking up the street. At about five feet from the horses, she stopped and settled for growling until they had moved on.
