Barry Bonds May Miss Season After Knee Surgery

Barry Bonds, only 11 home runs behind Babe Ruth on the all time list, says he may miss the entire 2005 season after his knee injury. It sounds like a combination of legitimate recuperation and pouting:

Bonds says he may be out until next season following knee surgery (SF Chronicle)

Leaning his head on a crutch and repeatedly saying he was tired, Barry Bonds said he might miss the entire season following his latest knee surgery. “Right now I’m just going to try to rehab myself to get back to, I don’t know, hopefully next season, hopefully the middle of the season. I don’t know. Right now I’m just going to take things slow,” he said Tuesday after meeting with San Francisco Giants trainer Stan Conte for 1 1/2 hours. “I’m 40 years old, not 20, 30.”

The seven-time NL MVP, who returned to spring camp Tuesday following last week’s surgery, made his remarks while sitting at a picnic table outside the Giants’ clubhouse with his 15-year-old son, Nikolai, at his side.

Bonds said he was tired and disappointed following a winter in which he was accused of steroid use, his grand jury testimony was leaked and he had two knee operations. He blamed his troubles on the media. “You wanted me to jump off a bridge, I finally did,” Bonds said. “You finally brought me and my family down. … So now go pick a different person.”

I suspect he’ll be back by the beginning of May.

    Thanks for the link!

  2. Jem says:

Speed of his return depends on how quickly the steroids and their metabolates pass out of the body. We’ll see how much weight/muscle he loses as a result of the “injury”.

  3. James Joyner says:

My strong suspicion is that Bonds was using steroids. I’m virtually certain, though, that he wasn’t doing so last year. Baseball was doing testing then.

  4. Davod says:

Baseball may have been doing random testing last year but that does not mean Bonds was not using steroids. The testing and reporting rules just set up look pretty loose. last year they mist have been abysmal.

I hate to wish bad on people but in Bonds case I’ll make an exception.
