Claire McCaskill To Skip Democratic National Convention

Another Democratic Senator has joined Joe Manchin in the decision to not attend the Democratic National Convention, and this one is at the same time surprising and unsurprising:

Claire McCaskill will not be attending the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, a McCaskill aide confirmed to TPM Tuesday. McCaskill joins a list of vulnerable Democratic politicians whose home districts are hostile ground for President Obama and who will be steering clear of the convention.

“In years when Claire is on the ballot, she has historically not gone to the convention,” the aide said, “because she believes it’s important to stay in Missouri to talk to voters.”

Yea, and I am sure that the fact that she happens to be perhaps the most vulnerable Democratic Senator running for re-election this year, in a state that seems to be clearly trending Republican, has nothing to do with it at all I’m sure.

Not surprising. Missouri is not Malibu and St. Louis is not SoHo. No way in hell was McCaskill going to go swimming in the DNC cesspool.

And Scott Brown and the Republican Senate candidate from Montana are making noises that they may skip their party’s convention.

The original stor(ies) on this one should have been filed under news of the glaringly obvious. Of course she (and many others like her) won’t be going to Charlotte. They have reelection campaigns that they rightly should be more focused on.

Frankly, I’m not sure why most would bother with the convention. It’s not as though what the outcome of the thing is going to be isn’t already well known.

Maybe she could make a surprise appearance at a gun show in Wilmington instead?
