Comet Machholz
Recently discovered comet now visible to naked eye (USA TODAY)
A comet discovered earlier this year has now moved close enough to be visible without binoculars or telescopes by experienced observers under dark skies. It is expected to put on a modest show this month and into January.
Comet Machholz will be at its closest to Earth Jan. 5-6, 2005, when it will be 32 million miles (51 million kilometers) away.
I remember seeing Halley’s comet on it’s last trip. I lived in SE Wisconsin then and much closer to my mom’s farm and it was easier to get away from City lights.
This NASA page contains some pictures of the comet and Space.com has a diagram of where it will be around January 2005.
The first thing that pop into my mind is Lucifer’s Hammer…

Lucifer’s Hammer was a good book. I think they know this one missed though.
