Donald Trump’s Deplorable Memorial Day Tweet

Donald Trump chose to mark Memorial Day by talking about himself.

The President is drawing criticism for the manner in which he chose to mark Memorial Day on Twitter:

President Trump marked Memorial Day in a tweet on Monday claiming that the nation’s fallen heroes “would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today.”

“Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18years), rebuilding our Military and so much more.” Trump tweeted.

“Nice!”

Memorial Day is held annually to honor service members who died for the U.S.Trump had tweeted a video in honor of the holiday earlier Monday.

The president is scheduled to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery later Monday morning.4

After that tweet, the President spent no less than three tweets pushing his new favorite conspiracy theory about the Russia investigation, which he was apparently inspired to do based on what he was seeing this morning on Fox & Friends.

Here’s the President’s tweet:

And here are the so-called “Spygate” tweets that followed:

Simply put, this is the most atrocious thing I have ever seen any President or politician say on Memorial Day. This isn’t a day to brag about yourself, it’s about remembering those who put their lives on the line for this country. Something Donald Trump never had the courage to do.

On some level, of course, it should not be surprising that the President chose to mark a solemn holiday such as Memorial Day by touting his Administration’s purported economic achievements and to continue trying to undermine the Russia investigation by pushing an entirely discredited conspiracy theory. This is, after all, a man who has a long history of being a self-promoting narcissist who has demonstrated no empathy and no regard at all for his fellow human beings. Given that, this tweet is entirely consistent with his previous behavior.

In the grand scheme of things, of course, this is a minor detail in the already long history of Donald Trump’s offenses against propriety, decency, and honor. There are far more important reasons to oppose and speak out against him. That being said, the fact that this man is Commander in Chief of the American military is just really depressing at this point.

Isn’t bragging and whining about yourself a worse show of disrespect for the country and the member of its armed services than taking a knee during the national anthem?

It’s what you get for electing a fucking liar and narcissist to such an important post. In particular one who’s own supporters say his greatest achievement thus far is he hasn’t regally fucked up yet.

There has to be a stronger word than “disgusting” to describe adequately this creature.

He loves that phrase “happy and proud,” doesn’t he? Remember when he said his immigration solution would make us all “happy and proud”? Remember when he said that the American people are “happy and proud” to be saying “Merry Christmas” again?

I’ll be happy and proud when I see him booted out of the White House on his fat, flabby ass and bounced down Pennsylvania Avenue.

Another newsflash from OTB: Donald Trump is a self-centered vulgarian!

And by the way, Jonathan Turley is pushing an “entirely discredited conspiracy?” Is Andrew McCarthy, Glenn Greenwald, and Mr. Dershowitz also part of this lying cabal of conspiracy-mongers? That’s quite a bizarre collection of Trump sycophants. Perhaps you could point me to a post of yours where you explain how their concerns are non-credible and why they’ve chosen to prostitute themselves for Trump’s benefit.

Do you know what the worst part about all of this is? He is NEVER going to shut up. Even if we get the ultimate pleasure of telling him he’s fired in 2020, or watching him hauled away in handcuffs, he is not going to stop running his mouth. Even locked away in a federal penitentiary with no access to the internet, or if the cheeseburger diet finally kills him, one of his minions will pick up the megaphone and continue to spew his “brand” of verbal diarrhea.

  10. Blue Galangal says:

@teve tory: Best part is that a real president tweeted that only 40 minutes ago and has nearly as many retweets already as the short-fingered vulgarian has had all morning. I don’t say that because I’m keeping score but because I know the short-fingered vulgarian does.

    4
  11. SenyorDave says:

@teve tory: Obama was a very eloquent president. The most amazing thing is that Trump doesn’t even have enough self-awareness to understand how disgusting the tweet was. If he had an ounce of understanding he would have told Kelly to get a junior staff member to write up an appropriate tweet that he could send out.

BTW, this what Trump wrote in the guest book when he visited Yad Vashem, Israel’s memorial to the victims of the Holocaust:

It is a great honor to be here with all of my friends – so amazing + will never forget.

I think he lifted that from the movie “Vacation”. Isn’t that what Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wrote in the guest book when the family visited Wally World?

For comparison purposes, this what Obama wrote when he visited Yad Vashem:

I am grateful to Yad Vashem and all of those responsible for this remarkable institution. At a time of great peril and promise, war and strife, we are blessed to have such a powerful reminder of man’s potential for great evil, but also our own capacity to rise up from tragedy and remake our world. Let our children come here, and know their history, so that they can add their voices to proclaim ‘never again.’ And may we remember those who perished, not only as victims, but also as individuals who hoped and loved and dreamed like us, and who have become symbols of the human spirit.

I assume he knew what he was going to write in advance and probably did an outline and let a speechwriter put it together. IOW, he PREPARED. Obama and all other past presidents in my memory actually treated the presidency as a job. trump treats it as afterthought, and spends most of his time trying to trumpet his personal achievements.

    9
  12. Kathy says:

America often gets compared to the Roman Empire. I don’t think the comparison is entirely apt, though there are parallels, but Roman history does seem quite relevant. For one thing, we should remember the Romans rebelled against their king and set up a Republic, which included systems of checks and balances (though markedly different from those we know today), designed to keep one man from having too much power.

Right when the Roman Republic attained both its greatest extent and greatest dominance over the Mediterranean world, internal crises set off a period of unrest, partisanship, infighting, and the rise of ambitious men who would accumulate power for themselves.

The Republic eventually fell, after two devastating civil wars. In its place rose the Roman Empire, initially led by Augustus. I mention him because he did something incredibly smart politically: he tore down the republic while preserving all of the republican institutions and offices. Things would seem to go on as before, with the same offices and the same structures everyone knew, but Augustus was, unpretentiously, the man in charge.

America is sliding more gradually, but the direction is the same: more power vested in one man, with the checks and balances ever more ineffective, and ever more dependent on the good will of the president to abide by them.

The history of the Roman Empire is told as a succession of emperors, while that of the Republic was more a succession of events (until personalities begin to dominate events). The quality of the emperor became all-important. Arguably the best era in Rome’s history was the period of the Five Good Emperors (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pious and Marcus Aurelius).

America’s history, thus far, is a succession of events. But presidents and their policies are becoming dominant. it helps that some policies, especially foreign policies, have been maintained more or less the same through succeeding presidencies. A pattern we’re seeing to become more strained every year.

As I said, things can be very good if the person on top is good (and competent). But they can also be terrible if they’re not. The reigns of Caligula and Nero and Commodus are examples of rampant abuse and corruption, but they’re not the only ones. Trump is well on track for making a lot of people miserable, and not only immigrants.

The only check Roman emperors had was the threat of being deposed (invariably through assassination). american presidents have more checks on their power, and it’s high time you began to apply them.

Right now only one thing will make the GOP rediscover their collective spine, if it hasn’t totally atrophied, and that is a major loss in the midterm elections.

His only thought for the people who he could send to their deaths and those who’ve already died is how sad it is that they can’t behold the MAGA. We’ll see something as outrageous on the 4th, Veterans’ Day and 9/11.

There’s no meaning to holidays for Trump – there’s only the notion that these are days to go out and have a great time. You’re thinking of Elagabalus, who had some common traits with the Orange Blob…

Later historians suggest Elagabalus showed a disregard for Roman religious traditions and sexual taboos. He replaced the traditional head of the Roman pantheon, Jupiter, with the deity Elagabalus, of whom he had been high priest. He forced leading members of Rome’s government to participate in religious rites celebrating this deity, over which he personally presided. Elagabalus was supposedly “married” as many as five times…and was reported to have prostituted himself in the imperial palace. His behavior estranged the Praetorian Guard, the Senate, and the common people alike.
