Drink More Wine: It’s Science

A diet rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, and wine is good for your heart.

NYT reports on a new health study:

About 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart disease can be prevented in people at high risk if they switch to a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, and even drink wine with meals, a large and rigorous new study found.

Clearly, the wine drinking is the key variable there. That’s my takeaway, at least.

While I haven’t seen any studies on this yet, I’m also drinking more whisky, just to be on the safe side.

This is good news for me. My wife comes from Mallorca (an island off the Med coast of Spain) so she does a lot of sea food w/ olive oil, nuts, beans… the whole 9 yards, except the wine. She gets migraines and wine guarantees one.

So I make up for it with scotch 😉

  2. JKB says:

So can we get that in 32 oz cups? To go?

  3. Franklin says:

@OzarkHillbilly: I thought it was red wine that was linked with some types of migraines, but shouldn’t you be drinking white wine with the fish?

    @JKB:

You joke, but the health benefit actually peaks at a relatively low 1-2 glasses of wine.

(Scotch would have too much alcohol and not enough reversitol.)

I’d love to hear the logic on that idiot downvote.

That said … I am drinking my vice liquid right now … more coffee than I probably should.

Of course, some studies say mondo coffee is good for the prostate. One can always hope.

BTW, here is the long-living Koop on the subject:

Alcohol: To reduce the risk for chronic disease, take alcohol only in moderation (no more than two drinks a day), if at all. Avoid drinking any alcohol before or while driving, operating machinery, taking medications, or engaging in any other activity requiring judgment.

  7. CSK says:

Someday, the medical advice will be: Drink one glass of red wine per day, consume a tablespoon of olive oil per day, pop one 81 mg aspirin per day, and live to be 120.

Don’t forget the study from the 80s regarding the consumption of fat and heart disease. There was one factor that held even higher correlation to heart disease–per capita ownership of cars. The more cars (therefore less walking) the more heart attacks.

Good enough for me! I’m selling the wheels and investing the return in cases of wine. Doctor’s happy, MADD’s happy, I’m really happy.
