INSIDE THE INSTALANCHE

Glenn’s link to the Blog Chicks Pix was the 5th Instalanche in OTB history (4 “natural” and one gimme for hosting the Carnival of the Vanities). I don’t know if it’s the subject matter, the timing, or the steady increase in Glenn’s traffic, but this may have been the biggest–if also the shortest.

What’s particularly fun this time is that it became a multiple wave ‘lanche, in that many of the sites linked in the post are experiencing surges in their traffic as well.

Here’s today’s traffic so far:

October so far:

For another perspective, here are some secondary wave effects from Kate at Katewerk, a non-blogging Canadian babe included in the “Hidden Gems” category: her log for today.

And it appears as if Venomous Kate experienced a slight pickup as well.

Update (2300): I’ve updated the graphs to give the picture of what the site looks like as I’m signing off for the night. Traffic is still markedly higher than normal for OTB this time of day but has obviously dropped precipitously as the post has fallen further down Glenn’s reverse chronology of posts. It’ll be archived in a couple of days, although I suspect I’ll get occasional hits to this post from time-to-time for quite a while–as will the many linked Blogging Babes.

I’m getting a mini-lanche from you (and Sheila who nominated me as a ‘babe’ in your comments. Literally; my front page has my baby pic on it). My head is big enough, thank you. 😉

  2. Yep, I’m seeing a lot of traffic too and the link from you tops the list of referrers. Thanks again and HOOAH Sir!

  3. More than 3,000 extra hits today, and counting.

First in line pays off, this time.

So nice, too, considering my last name. I was last in line until 7th grade, when I met Cindy Zarsky, who became my bestest friend immediately.

    Absolutely hilarious.

Slight pickup? That’s an understatement! I’ve probably gotten 700-800 more hits today because of your (very kind and generous) link and its subsequent instalanche. Now I’m frantically digging for a better picture. 😉

  6. Here are the official stats, via WebTrends:

2900 referrers from Outside the Beltway between 1 p.m. and 2 a.m. In that same period, about 4,000 requests on the page in question. Overall traffic for the day: 5,835 visits. Traffic record, set only a few weeks ago: 6,420 visits. Average daily traffic: 1300-1500 visits, but it hasn’t settled down from my other high-traffic days this month (it’s been a busy month for me). Average referrers from Outside the Beltway: you haven’t even made it onto the top 50 in the past three months, needing a minimum of about 75-100 referrers to do that.

Traffic today: Still above normal, most referrers still from Outside the Beltway.

Conclusion: People want to see pictures of women.

Yeah, I know, that’s a gimme, but still… this phenomenon is amusing.

I’m not getting traffic the other ladies are getting, but I definitely got a surge yesterday.

    Meryl,

Very intersting. And, yep, guys seem to be programmed so that “What does she look like?” is an immediate question regarding any female encountered.

Remember, this all started with an immense reaction to a couple headshots of Megan McArdle!

  9. So should I send Megan a thank-you note, then?

I’m still at about double or better traffic today.

  10. James Joyner says:

Heh. Yeah, me, too. A normal “good” day for me during the week is 1000 uniques and a high normal day is 1500. I’m closing in on 3000, which I’ll reach in another hour or so at current pace.

Yes, i got a 2ndary lanche too! Thanks dude!
