IRAQ–THE 51st STATE? Andrew Sullivan has some excellent observations on the dangers of US occupation of post-war Iraq. As I pointed out a few days ago, having a brief period of US military government strikes me as unavoidable for logistical reasons. But we must affect the transition to a democratic Iraqi government as quickly as possibly. Ideally, we’d do that through the UN, although that may be difficult if we undertake the operation outside of the aegis of that body.
