Mary Cheney: Selfish Hedonist

Matt Drudge

Alan Keyes, the Republican candidate for a vacant U.S. Senate seat in Illinois, said Tuesday that Vice President Dick Cheney’s daughter Mary is a “selfish hedonist” because she is a lesbian. His comments came during an interview with SIRIUS satellite radio. Keyes said: “The essence of … family life remains procreation. If we embrace homosexuality as a proper basis for marriage, we are saying that it’s possible to have a marriage state that in principal excludes procreation and is based simply on the premise of selfish hedonism.” Asked whether that meant Mary Cheney “is a selfish hedonist,” Keyes said: “That goes by definition. Of course she is.”

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I mean, really. Let’s take Keyes’ analysis on face value: What’s the harm in this particular selfish hedonism? Given that most people are heterosexual, selfish hedonism is going to create plenty of babies to sustain us. As long as people become less selfish once their babies arrive, how does society suffer? Does it follow that lesbians have a duty to marry men and procreate? What about infertile lesbians? Is it okay if they’re selfish and hedonistic, since they can’t produce babies, or must they do their Christian duty and adopt?

Regardless of the answers to those questions, I remain astounded that there isn’t a single Republican in Illinois more qualified to run for the Senate than this nut.
