Mitt Romney’s Fundraising

Michael Turk, former e-campaign director of the Republican National Committee and Bush-Cheney 2004, looks at Mitt Romney’s fundraising reports and believes “the numbers just don’t add up.” Specifically, he contends that the online totals are padded through creative accounting to hide the fact that most of the money they are raising is coming from big donors rather than grassroots support. I find the argument persuasive.

In addition to the points Turk makes, I’d add another: He has far outstripped the GOP field in fundraising yet remains a distant fourth or even fifth in most public opinion polls. A guy who is trailing not only the freefalling John McCain but the not-yet-running Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich probably doesn’t have a ton of people sending him $100 checks.
