While I know that people sometimes take politics into account when they move, the main variables are work and family. And while it is perfectly fine for federalism to mean some local variations in policies, rights for American citizens should not be determined by the state in which one lives.

That NYT piece on the Court is a pretty good takedown of Alito’s decision overturning Roe. The author, Linda Greenhouse, notes a detail from the 70s I had been unaware of. In his concurrence Thomas is inviting activists to bring certain cases to the Court, signaling an openness to them. Under rules then in place, the 70s Court was required to hear Roe. Far from activist. The piece is also an antidote to the Murc’s Law idea that Dems are responsible for Dobbs because they didn’t write the original Roe decision well enough. Didn’t matter, Alito and the other Federalist Catholics were going to do what they did, whatever the obstacles.
LGM this morning has a post on Ben Franklin publishing instructions for an herbal method of abortion. A bit of history Alito seems to have omitted in his haste to find a witch hunter who agreed with him.

I read the piece about Google search over the weekend.
I do get too many irrelevant results now that I didn’t used to. And I get fewer results I do want.
A good example is the weight of products. The other day a customer wanted tuna in cans of 135 gr. net, 105 gr. drained. The usual is 140/100, or 130/90. Not only did Google not find it, but it kept showing me purchasing options for 140 or 130. Not long ago, it would show links to companies that produce canned tuna, where you could look for further info.

Steven, I suspect you know this but to be really clear for anyone else, Senator Hawley isn’t advocating for “some local variation in policies” via federalism. He’s arguing for greater power for the GOP at the federal level via the Electoral College. As he says, further political sorting is “very good news” for the authoritarian party.
@CSK: I suspect it’s anybody who dares to enjoy it. As somebody upthread mentioned, some uptight Mormon’s can have very strange ideas about sex. It’s not meant to be enjoyed, it’s meant for procreation.

A long time ago when I and my (now) wife were young (barely/not yet out of our teens), we experienced a condom malfunction and had to get Plan B – something that plenty of GOP zealots classify as an abortifacient.
I’m pretty sure that if that accident had resulted in a child, three lives would have been needlessly ruined.
Lisonbee is worse than a fool. “Callous, sanctimonious bicth” would be a more apt description.

It’s often hard to discern just what George Will’s point is. Apparently it’s that Thomas and his homies should have worried more about public safety. But being George, he identified and italicized for emphasis a key point and then ignored it. He highlighted that the 2A says bear arms. Then he failed to note that in the late 1700s, as now, “bear” arms connotes military usage. One might also note that a Glock with an oversized magazine could raise more of a concern for safety than a muzzle loading pocket pistol.
Have the recent gun and abortion decisions established a new format for opinions? A decision with argument followed by a list of rationalization claiming the decision didn’t open the huge can of worms it obviously opened?

A few years back there was a similar pronouncement, sort of like a woman can choose not to get pregnant from rape.
Fact is, of course, that a woman can’t control a man’s ejaculation whether it is the result of consensual sex or rape. And then what happens is very independent of the woman’s wishes. that’s why there is contraception and abortion.
It’s a bit like saying that you can choose not to get fat from eating Twinkies and cheeseburgers.

@CSK: Yes, and a surprising number of people seem to believe this, likely an intentional misread about the effects of chronic, ongoing stress on fertilization rates. I vaguely remember reading a scientific journal article that said actually, the opposite is true: that cases of extreme stress (such as an assault) are more likely to result in a pregnancy but I cannot remember the mechanism as to why that would be the case.
