I am always interested in theories as to what this, or any Jethro Tull song, is actually about (beyond merely sounding cool, of course):

Personally, I’ve always thought it was about some kind of personal train wreck (the exact nature of which is left vague on purpose). But that’s me.
The locomotive is an analogy for life’s journey – Charlie is ‘God’. And it’s a GREAT rock song!
