I’m on vacation in Miami through tomorrow evening, so posting from me will be much lighter than normal. The Traffic Jam linkfests will appear at 16:15 Eastern both days as well as the occasional post. My co-bloggers may fill the slack with some material of their own.

My computer is tango uniform at the moment, with some sort of problem involving the motherboard. Fortunately, the contents of the hard drive are intact, if only accessible for minutes or seconds at a time before the machine overheats and freezes. Dell is going to replace the offending parts in the next day or two but, in the meantime, I’m without computer access at home.

Perhaps this is the excuse to buy that notebook I’ve been thinking about getting. . . .

  2. If you have Windows 2000 on a Dell tower and installed one of their recent service packs — some time within the last six months — then that could be it. I’ve had the same problem and the only way to solve it is uninstall the SP. You will need boot disks to do it. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Light to zero blogging the rest of the evening. I’m off to grab dinner and make a brief appearance at Blogorama. DC area bloggers–or anyone who can get there in time, I guess–are invited to attend. It starts at 7 p.m. at “Rendezvous Lounge, conveniently located at the scenic intersection of 18th Street and Kalorama.” (Yes, you were given advance notice.)

Posting will be light today as I get settled into the new job. Not only will I likely be busy inprocessing and whatnot, I suspect it’ll be a couple of days before I’ve even got a ‘net account set up at the office. I’m led to believe that I’ll be able to compose the Traffic Jam at some point before leaving, however.

I’ll almost certainly not be checking e-mail until this evening.

Winners of the open caption contest and a new Beltway Traffic Jam will be coming your way this afternoon.

Update (1431): I had some problems with my OTB email account that I have now resolved. Well, the cats and I are now in the new townhouse and officially online using my wireless connection. I’ve been at the move since around 6 this morning and this is the first time I’ve had the computer on or, indeed, plugged in today. I’ll likely do some light blogging after I’ve had a shower and something to eat.

This was easily the worst move I’ve ever made–from a three-story townhouse to another three-story townhouse is the pits. I had professional movers to help me bring the big stuff and it still took eight hours. On top of that, the center pieces of my armoires couldn’t be manuevered up the steps. I’ve had bad moves into apartments, but one would think a three-bedroom house would be designed to accomodate getting grown-up furniture into the bedrooms.

Talking about grown up furniture, where I live in Vermont the mattress stores all carry split boxsprings because the stairways of 70 year old houses were not designed with the dimensions of a queen size mattresses.

And of course I found this out when the movers tried to get my bed into my rental house and the clearance was an inch less than needed.

  2. James Joyner says:

Funny. I have a king sized bed but, fortunately, it came with spilt box springs. The mattress is a real pain to get up stairs but, unlike my armoirs, is somewhat flexible.

  1. Bryan says:

I’ll bet you get a really nice reception up there in D.C. with your Cowboy allegiance. šŸ™‚

I’m curious to see what the cowboys do as well. They’re “due” for another Emmitt or Troy.

  2. Bryan says:

Okay, so what’s up with drafting a cornerback at No. 5?!?!?

  3. James Joyner says:

Strangely, I see a surprising number of people with Cowboys paraphenalia around here.

Newman was the right call, I think. The team needs a shutdown corner, a starting running back, and a pash-rushing defensive lineman. There wasn’t a surefire running back in this draft with McGahee injured and the best d-lineman went to the Bears with the 4 pick. Newman was rated the #1 player in the draft by at least 10 different clubs. This is a passing league; you have to have several high caliber CBs to win. The Cowboys, arguably, had one: Ross.

  4. Bryan says:

So you mean to tell me that they actually picked the “best available player” this year? Here’s hoping that he holds to expectations. I wish they’d have gotten this caliber CB when Neon was there to help train him.

Maybe Bill Parcells will do face-lift Jerry some good after all.

BTW, I can’t help it. Every time I see OTB, I think it’s “Off Track Betting.” Perhaps you missed the true name of this blog. šŸ˜‰

  5. James Joyner says:

    šŸ™‚

It looks like both 2002 and 2003 Jerry resisted his natural urge to “wildcat” and just trusted the board put together by his scouting department. The disasters have come in drafts like 2001 where he reached to get Quincy Carter, who almost everyone thought was a 4th round pick, with a 2nd rounder because he “HAD to have” him. That draft was awful because the Cowboys reached several times for high risk/high reward types. I think Mario Edwards is all that remains of his class.

The Dallas Morning News team had Newman as the top overall player this year and Roy Williams last year. They’re apparently cut out of similar cloth.
