Representative Government

Citizen Smash has an interesting account of his lobbying efforts with his U.S. Representative Saturday.

I had an encounter with a Congressman Saturday, too, although nothing quite so dramatic. My undergrad alma mater, Jacksonville State University, has a surprisingly large alumni cohort in the Greater Washington area so we started an alumni association last fall. Our featured speaker for Saturday’s luncheon was Congressman Mike Rogers of Alabama’s 3rd Congressional District. Mike is a 1981 graduate of the university’s political science program and happens to be my parents’ representative. After lunch, he took us on a personal tour of the Capitol and was quite generous with his time. Given the freakishly busy schedules Congressmen have, it was an awfully nice gesture on his part, especially since, by definition, none of us are his constituents.
