The underdog is the underdog until he wins, regardless of whether or not he’s pulled ahead in the middle of the race. You don’t become the top dog by being in the lead, you become the top dog by winning.
One can hardly wait for the 2012 campaign when the incumbent will be campaigning as an underdog.
