WAR IS HELL

WAR IS HELL: Reuters reports: Red Cross Voices Concern About Situation in Basra. The situation? Apparently, there’s a war on and it’s hard for Red Cross workers to travel safely.

Update: Via e-mail, reader “Rocky” observes: “I’m not sure the sacrasm (“apparently, there’s a war on”) is merited here — we want the Iraqi people on our side. If they’re suffering, it doesn’t help us a bit, regardless of whether this is normal in the course of war. We should be rooting for the red cross, and the arrival of US Aid.” I agree wholeheartedly. But it is probably unreasonable to expect it to be able to happen while the battle still rages in that part of Iraq. Once it’s secured, I’m sure our forces will be stationed there to help the Red Cross operate safely.
