Why Are Democrats Reopening The Birther Story?

As I noted earlier this week, Neil Abercrombie, the new Governor of Hawaii, has taken it upon himself to put an end to the myth that President Obama was not born in the United States. At the time, I noted that his efforts seemed pointless because there really wasn’t anything he could do that would convince the birther crowd that they were wrong.

Perhaps it’s because it’s a slow news week that this story has gotten attention, including this bizarre segment on Harball last night where Chris Matthews essentially adopts the birther argument that the President needs to produce his “long form” birth certificate:

All of this comes reports from Hawaii of increased requests for copies of President Obama’s birth records.

As I said on Sunday, all this does is encourage the nutjobs.

I don’t think this will harm Obama and will probably help. Gov produces long form birth certificate. Birthers start decrying it as a fake. The Obama team gets to look reasonable and all their hysterical opponents are tarred by association.

  2. largebill says:

    Doug,

Wait a second, a few days ago when you could lump the birthers in with the right and conservatives you were convinced it must be proof of racism. Now, some left wing idiot (Matthews) is asking about the stupid thing and you have to ask “Why are Democrats reopening the birther story?” Heck, just ask Doug from a couple days ago and he’d tell you Matthews is a racist.

  3. Matthews isn’t a racist he is, like Abercrombie, a fool who thinks you can make the birthers go away by treating them as if they are rational human beings. Since they aren’t, this whole thing is, as I’ve said, a fools errand

  4. Jay Tea says:

Stupid largebill. Liberals can’t be racist. Likewise, all conservatives are considered racist until proven otherwise — and then they are anyway.

    And it’s spelled RAAAAACIST.

I’m with MarkedMan on this one, get the right foaming at the mouth about long forms instead of giving intelligent criticism of policies, and it’ll be an easy win for Obama in 2012.

  6. Jack says:

The birthers follow the same philosophy as a significant percentage of so-called “conservatives”, to wit when “refudiated” they move the goal posts. See McCain regarding DADT.

God Himself could come down and say that President Obama is an American citizen who was born in Hawaii to a woman who was an American citizen, with back-up affidavits from Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost, and the birthers would still say, “I reject your reality and substitute my own.”

Must be nice to live in your own little world…

“As I said on Sunday, all this does is encourage the nutjobs.”

Seriously Doug, why is it so hard for you to grasp this simple truth? In politics, it is to your advantage (usually in a big way) to encourage the nutjobs amongst your opponents. It raises the probability that the nutjobs end up defining the opposition to you, thus allowing you an easy path to winning, or holding, the allegiance of the sane middle.

  8. Franklin says:

The long form birth certificate will satisfy absolutely nobody. That is all.

  9. MM says:

I like how Jay Tea stops by every birther thread to make sure that everyone is aware that he is the real victim here.

  10. JKB says:

The Dems are reopening the birther conspiracy so that when Obama crashes, they can claim he is not one of them. When that happens a birth certificate will rapidly make it into the open.

Seems odd that everyone is clamoring for Obama’s “birth certificate,” which is supposedly being withheld for nefarious reasons from a state controlled by Democrats who openly brag of corruption that would perp walk them in other states. If this “conspiracy” is so deep and effective, couldn’t they just replace the official birth record with a fake one?

Kind of like I saw the other day about the 9/11 conspiracy types. Namely, if the government could run an attack on the US and kill thousands of of people, wouldn’t they be prepared to rub out the few who sought to expose them?

  11. An Interested Party says:

“Seems odd that everyone is clamoring for Obama’s “birth certificate”…

Actually, it is primarily your fellow travelers who are clamoring for his birth documents, hardly “everyone”…
