Steven L. Taylor is a Professor of Political Science and a College of Arts and Sciences Dean. His main areas of expertise include parties, elections, and the institutional design of democracies. His most recent book is the co-authored A Different Democracy: American Government in a 31-Country Perspective. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas and his BA from the University of California, Irvine. He has been blogging since 2003 (originally at the now defunct Poliblog).

Are you in Vietnam Nam? Beautiful country. I was there with my family over New Years once, and did a few things I never expected such as sled down sand dunes and ride an ostrich (or at least the other, smaller, members of my family did)… All day long we would watch the local fishermen bring the best of their catch to the restaurants on the beach, and then in the evening we would stroll down, take a look at what was swimming in the concrete fish pools, point out what we wanted and then point to a picture depicting how we wanted it cooked.
Wow! Thanks for the picture, Steven. This brings back some memories, but how things have changed! In 1968 we Marines called this S**t Beach, because the citizens would simply drop trou and defecate in plain view. You walked on the beach at your peril.
