Capitol Leader - Journalists Who Have Distinctive Signatures

Jay Rosen has an interesting interview with John Harris, who along with Jim VandeHei, recently left the Washington Post to start a new enterprise tentatively called The Capital Leader. His goal is to assemble “a collection of journalists who have distinctive signatures—by virtue of their personalities or source networks or ability to connect the dots in illuminating ways” and unleash them from some of the restraints of institutional journalism so that their writing will be as interesting as their cocktail party chatter.

Let’s hope he succeeds.

It would be far too glib to say that The Capitol Leader sounds a lot like a blog. While blogs occasionally do original reporting–and some bloggers do quite a bit of it–the medium is dominated by punditry rather than reportage. That’s not a bad thing by any means but it’s not enough. A publication that can combine the best aspects of a blog and a newspaper would be truly interesting.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia.
