Iceland’s Openly Gay Prime Minister

While the global financial crisis has spawned many predictions of political change, here’s one I’m betting no one saw coming: The World’s First Openly Gay Prime Minister.

Not, I hasten to add, that there’s anything wrong with that.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and infant daughter.

You know, I've always hated that qualifier. When a mixed couple moved into my parents' neighborhood a few years ago (rural, white, farming area), they were all the community was talking about for months. They'd always say, "Not that there's anything wrong with that," implying that people would assume there was. They often also added, "they're nice, though."

Don't mind me, just a random pet peeve.

A rather dated Seinfeldism.

Icelandic chicks are hot until they hit 25, then they go down hill.

The World’s First Openly Gay Prime Minister.

Does this mean that that Obama is the US's First Openly Black President?

But, I will give her four paws up...
Woof...Wooof...

Not, I hasten to add, that there’s anything wrong with that.

""You know, I've always hated that qualifier""
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

I too hate that qualifier, since it illustrates the extent to which free speech has been sublimated in the pursuit of an agenda.
Perversity today has simply come to mean not kowtowing to the latest in political correctness.
What a shame, for all concerned.

I know people whose sole rationale for voting for Obama was "to put racism behind us."

Rosie O'Donnell doesn't have political ambitions does she?

See, I thought she looked kinda sweet.

Gotta love this from JJ's post:

(Andrew titles his post, "Lesbian Gets Second Worst Job In The World" in what one presumes is an homage to November's bit in The Onion, "Black Man Given Nation's Worst Job.")

I still hope that the worst job in the world will one day be "Osama bin Laden's mortician."

As James mentioned, this is a Seinfeldism. In fact, my interpretation of that episode (aside from just a running gag), was a bit of a play on sterotypical PC behaviors, in that the characters are so over the top in maing sure that they say "Not that there's anything wrong with that" whenever they deny that George is gay.

This is a fairly well known pop cultural reference from a show over a decade old. I hardly think that this is either the "latest" in PC, or "kowtowing".

*shrug* I never really liked Seinfeld and didn't watch it much. I was in middle/high school, and had much better uses for my time. I don't recall that episode. Maybe I've heard the reference or something, I don't know. I honestly get annoyed by the phrase, because of the aforementioned incident. I'm reasonably certain that I'm not person on earth who occasionally gets annoyed by things that might not bother others - that's why it's a pet peeve.

If you consider me overly PC, so be it - somehow, I'll go on - but as MM says, it would be hard to say it's the "latest" in PC if it's annoyed me for years, or if you assume I'm quoting an old sitcom.

James: As I (apparently poorly) tried to make clear at the end of the post, it's just something that bugs me, nothing else, and I'm not sure why I bothered posting it. Maybe I just felt chatty yesterday. I apologize for somewhat derailing the thread.

Anyone else think that Sigurdardóttir is an appropriately Wagnerian name for the person who's prime minister while the country's economy is in the process of burning down?
