2010: Banner Year for Pirates

Via the BBC:  Pirates seized record 1,181 hostages in 2010 – report.

The numbers are the highest since 1991 (when the numbers were first kept).

The vast majority of pirating has its origins in Somalia, which currently has no functional state (and hasn’t for almost two decades)
