CORRUPTION
Amitai Etzioni, who is both brilliant and without question a much better social scientist than I, nonetheless leads a recent post on his weblog with this:
Much of the legislation in Washington goes to the highest bidder; those with deep pockets win most of the time.
Huh? He simply posits this with zero evidence. I expect this kind of assertion from undergraduates; not from respected scholars.
It is a very commonly held perception, even amongst the well-educated.
