At least five people were killed in an apparent suicide bombing Wednesday in the Israeli coastal city of Hadera, Israel authorities said. Twenty-one people also were wounded in the attack at a crowded marketplace in Hadera, located about 40 miles (64 km) north of Tel Aviv, Israel police said. Of the 21 wounded, six were in serious condition, hospital sources said.

A person claiming to be a representative of Islamic Jihad said in a telephone call to CNN that the group was responsible for the attack.
