OTB Status Update

Things are looking up.

It’s been just under two months since my “OTB’s Future” post warning that the site as you know it is in peril and asking for reader feedback. Here’s a brief update.

In the ensuing period, 19 folks have either joined our Patreon or upped their monthly contributions. Another three have made one-time donations via PayPal. Thanks!*

While we’re still not bringing in enough revenue to cover the costs of running the site in its current form, we’re getting close. Depending on what we discover over the summer, what it will cost to get the site running more efficiently on the backend remains to be seen.

*I’ve noted multiple times that I’ve been reluctant to ask for contributions. Partly because I’ve that, I’ve largely ignored the backend of the Patreon site since setting it up, unaware of various tools for contacting contributors. I’ve done a woeful job of thanking folks for their support.

Really glad to hear it! While I know you instinctually dislike asking folks for money, a post here or there reminding us our donations matter–or even just updating us on fundraising progress–would not be minded one bit.

This is terrific. In the twelve years I’ve been reading and commenting at OTB, the site’s gotten me through a few rough times. That’s because 99.9% of the people here are intelligent, sane, literate, well-informed, and, sometimes, very funny. There’s no place on the web like it.

    Good to know.
I hope later this summer (Oh hear me Lord!) to have sufficient financial headroom to chip in a bit.
(Assuming our idiot government refrains from crashing the economy again.)
If I’m going to annoy people, I might at least pay for the privilege, I suppose. 🙂

I made a one time contribution. I received an acknowledgment from PayPal but OTB was silent. Is it too much to expect at least an acknowledgment? I make contributions to several websites and they all at least acknowledge the contribution.
