Posting Delay

I was working on a longish post in the coffee-damaged laptop when the replacement arrived. I’m setting it up now and will serve up fresh content later.

    It’s outrageous that you’ve prioritized setting up a new computer over providing us content! 😉

    @Andy: @CSK: Honestly, it was the frustration of trying to blog (which involves much more intricate maneuvers than normal office work) that forced me to suck it up and replace the damn laptop. The post would have taken 30 minutes with a functional computer but had dragged well past that.

    I don’t know about you James, but I used to get excited when I got a new computer, but nowadays I just think about what I have to do to set it up like my old one. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your perspective) I’m pretty deep into the Apple mind-meld, so setting up a new computer is pretty automatic even without the migration tool. I prefer not to use it because I like the idea of starting over with a clean slate, so I re-download my apps and log into my websites all over again. All my files, browser history, media, etc just show up.

    @MarkedMan: No, the computer is pretty much an appliance at this point. I migrated from a 2022 MacBook Pro to a 2022 MacBook Air, both with the same basic specs, and it’s reasonably seamless but still more a PITA than I’d want it to be.

    @Mister Bluster: Indeed! After the mishap and following a recommendation from a commenter, I bought a stand to elevate the laptop well above the level of the desk where I place my beverages.

    @Andy: Yeah! Who does he think he is??? The blog master or something???

    @MarkedMan:

    I feel that way about the misnamed modern cell phones.

    I take screenshots of the home screen, and make a list of apps I use frequently or which are useful on rare occasions (like Uber). Then I try to make the new phone match the older one. I want to match the layout on the home screen, so I won’t waste time hunting for apps in the new phone.

    Computers, the last ones I bought were in 2012 and 2013. They rely less on apps. Pretty much I download MS Office and Acrobat Reader only. For a lot of the cell phone apps, like the bank app, a browser is sufficient.

    I bought a stand
