YiLing Chen-Josephson does a comparative analysis of popular dictionaries for Slate. Here’s something I was vaguely aware of at some point in the past but had forgotten:
The first thing to know is that “Webster” is a name in the public domain and, as such, can be used by anyone. Dictionaries with “Webster” in their title have no more in common with each other than with any other dictionary.
