BREAKING: North Korea’s Long-Range Missile Was Aimed Near Hawaii?

Via Reuters India:

A North Korean missile launched on Wednesday was aimed at an area of the ocean close to Hawaii, a Japanese newspaper reported on Friday.

Experts estimated the Taepodong-2 ballistic missile to have a range of up to 6,000 km, putting Alaska within its reach. Wednesday’s launch apparently failed shortly after take-off and the missile landed in the sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan, a few hundred kilometres from the launch pad.

But data from U.S. and Japanese Aegis radar-equipped destroyers and surveillance aircraft on the missile’s angle of take-off and altitude indicated that it was heading for waters near Hawaii, the Sankei Shimbun reported, citing multiple sources in the United States and Japan.

North Korea may have targeted Hawaii to show the United States that it was capable of landing a missile there, or because it is home to the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific fleet, the paper said.

An alternative explanation might be that a missile could accidentally hit land if fired towards Alaska, the report said.

A separate report in the Mainichi Shimbun daily cited U.S. and Japanese government officials as saying a piece of the Taepodong-2 missile fell off immediately after take-off, strengthening the view that the launch was a failure.

What else can I say other than that if this is true, this situation is about to get a hell of a lot worse.

    Like I said previously,

Did it really fail or did we take it out ?

If it was a real failure, Maybe we could just have a long talk with the NK and ask them to be Nice ? (Left wing Democrat cut and run talk for “I surrender” Are the Dems taking lessons from the French ?

just shows to go ya’, don’t get your used Taepodongs at Uncle Hu’s used missile dealership, you could wind up with a lemon of a Hyundai

if a missile falls into the sea and nobody dies, does it make an explosion?

i grant you that the north koreans may just be crazy enough to want to blow us up. but do you really think KJI is so far gone that he doesn’t believe we’ll nuke the tar out of his country if he were to land one on our soil?

his only hidden card, and this one truly scares me, is that he’s paired up with the chinese, and they’re actually pulling the strings and covering his rear end. in that case, he could nuke alaska and we probably wouldn’t do shit about it. cause let’s all face it, we’re not touching the chinese–ever. the russians don’t scare us, terrorists don’t scare us, castro is but a pimple on uncle sam’s ass. but the chinese? ain’t happening.

let’s just pray he doesn’t destroy the ANWR reserve. that would just suck.

the real question news agencies should be asking is what role does china play in this?

not in negotiations, but secretly in providing nuclear technology (stolen from us in the clinton years) or in actually pulling the NK strings.

Man you people will latch on to anything to rationalize your horny attraction to military force? God, how many times will you people let yourself be lead around by the nose? Your all being played, and falling for it hook, line, and sinker.

Or it could be that it was really a space launch. A trajectory for a low earth orbit insertion will head in the SE direction, taking it towards Hawaii. So we still don’t really know what was on that rocket.

why is it that liberals always assume our government is involved in conspiracies of power but never questions other nations–especially the communist ones–that they might conspire against us? i just don’t get that.

I’m all for taking out every missile pad in NK if they launch a missile that hits even within 500 miles of Hawaii, but I can’t help wondering if their missile’s trajectory was screwed up from the very start.

Of course, between “launching missiles at us” and “launching missiles at random,” there’s not a great deal to choose. But the present report sounds a lot like a last gasp from those who wanted us to hit NK.

I see that Rick DeMent is living up to his name

  10. The Japs blundered badly by launching a sneak attack on Pearl (they tried to give about an hours warning, but snafus made them late). They aroused a giant. Some of the commenters would see it as just a regrettable error not worthy of military retaliation if the missile had landed on a Honolulu children’s hospital and killed a thousand kids.

    DeMent,
The alternative question is how many Americans would have to die before you see that a military solution applied in a timely manner can save lives. Bush is going the route of diplomacy at this time. Perhaps your BDS is playing you.

After what’s been happening at Protein Wisdom the last couple of days, and some of the guano that’s been flying at Wizbang, and now this — even Rick isn’t usually this bad — I have to wonder if darth Rove has turned up the mind-control ray or aomething.

Y’all do know those tinfoil hats actually amplify the ‘waves, right?
