Quote Of The Day
From a South Carolina State Legislator:
“We tried that, and it didn’t work out so well,” state Sen. Hugh Leatherman, R-Florence, on a suggestion by another lawmaker that South Carolina take over some then-closed federal park sites, such as Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, the scene of the start of the recent unpleasantness.

That is almost British in its understatement. I wholeheartedly approve.
It didn’t turn out well? They controlled American national politics for the next 100 years or so. Not bad for being on the “losing” side.
It kind of reminds me of the NATO plans to counter the Soviet surge into the Atlantic in The Hunt For Red October. They brought a British anti-submarine “baby carrier” (Either HMS Invincible or HMS Illustrious — I don’t recall) in between the Soviets and the US, while an American carrier battle group stayed out to sea of the Soviets to pose a potential threat from that direction. The British commander remarked that this was probably the first time they’d defended the US east coast since it belonged to them.
@Jenos Idanian #13: I’ll match that with the Japanese surrender in WWII: “The situation has developed not necessarily to Japan’s advantage.”
Sen. Leatherman is my state Senator, and he’s both a class act all the way and a darned good legislator.
He makes a good multitool as well.
@grumpy realist: Game, set, and match. That is an even better comparison. Plus, it’s from a real person. I yield quite cheerfully.
