Dolphins Never Forget

"Say that, in 1993, you were at a bar having some beers with a dolphin" has been nominated and seconded as the "Best opening sentence. EVER."

“Say that, in 1993, you were at a bar having some beers with a dolphin” has been nominated and seconded as the “Best opening sentence. EVER.”

It was written by Megan Garber for a posting titled, “If You Insulted a Dolphin 20 Years Ago, He’s Probably Still Bitter About It.” The upshot is that dolphins have great memories.

Of course, those of us who’ve been watching the 1972 Dolphins celebrate each year when the last NFL team falls from the ranks of the unbeaten for more than four decades now already knew this.

    NPR had a piece on this reaearch yesterday.

    “She says it’s possible that other animals with complex social lives, like elephants, chimpanzees, dogs and even parrots, may also have good memories. But scientists haven’t yet found a way to test it in those species.”

  3. ernieyeball says:

    @Bullwinkle: She says it’s possible…

    It is also possible that Godzilla will rise from the ocean and crush Japan like a tsunami induced earthquake.
    I would hope that a competent scientist would test for probability.

    Hmm. One might get the idea that creatures besides man have value and value things.

    If animals can’t value anything, why then can they form Inter-species friendships ?

    Brilliant!!!
    Having spent some time in and around the NFL…I no longer follow a specific team like most fans do.
    However, having lived in Miami and having met a number of the ’72 Phins through my work…I always root for them when any other team gets on a roll.

    @Moosebreath: Yes there’s unfortunately a strong species-ist mindset among Americans, particularly of the religious and right-wing persuasions. Anything not judged “intelligent” on our terms is absurdly deemed inferior and therefore a thing to be used and discarded at our convenience; one more thing their god will condemn them for when she looks at the casual brutality they inflicted on living things just because they had four legs.

    it’s a good opening line line, i like this one better though;

    “We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold.”
