Reagan. of course, did end up running that year and actually received more popular votes in the GOP primaries than Richard Nixon, largely because he appeared unchallenged on the California primary ballot that year However, because of the way that the GOP allocated delegates back then, he was far behind Nixon in the delegate count when the party convention started in Miami. Reagan would run again in 1976, but it would only be in 1980 that he finally won the nomination.
