Reports on Kerry Affair Inconclusive

Dan Drezner passes on this AP story quoting the alleged intern who allegedly had an alleged affair with John Kerry–who was allegedly in Vietnam–denying the alleged affair and even the alleged internship:

Breaking her silence four days after the allegations surfaced on the Internet, Alexandra Polier issued a statement to The Associated Press, saying, “I have never had a relationship with Senator Kerry, and the rumors in the press are completely false.”

***

Polier also took issue with reports that referred to her as a former Kerry intern.

“I never interned or worked for John Kerry,” she told AP over the phone.

Intriguing. Does she have pay stubs proving that she was not having an affair with Kerry? Or at least dental records? And does Kerry have records proving where he was during this time? And, if he does, can he prove they weren’t scrubbed to remove the incriminating evidence? Is he hiding the fact that he smoked crack cocaine? Can he prove that he didn’t borrow large sums of money from his wife to buy Polier’s silence? I shall not rest until I know. (Kevin Drum is, however, satisfied.)

In a separate statement, Polier’s parents, Terry and Donna Polier of Malvern, Pa., dismissed the “completely false and unsubstantiated” allegations about their daughter.

“We love and support her 100 percent and these unfounded rumors are hurtful to our entire family,” the statement said. “We appreciate the way Senator Kerry has handled the situation, and intend on voting for him for president of the United States.”

The statement did not address purported quotes by Polier’s parents in the British tabloid The Sun that were harshly critical of Kerry.

Curious indeed. I suppose they don’t mind voting for a “sleazeball.”

PRESIDENTIAL hopeful John Kerry was branded a “sleazeball†last night by the parents of a young woman he allegedly tried to woo.

Alex Polier, 24, was named as the woman at the centre of a scandal that threatens to damage Democrat Kerry̢۪s bid for the White House.

Her mother Donna claims Kerry, 60 — dubbed the new JFK — once chased Alex to be on his campaign team and was “after herâ€.

There is no evidence the pair had an affair, but her father Terry, 56, said: “I think he’s a sleazeball. I did kind of wonder if my daughter didn’t get that kind of feeling herself.

“He’s not the sort of guy I would choose to be with my daughter.â€

In charge of the nuclear button, though? Why not!

Indeed, I have been quite astounded by the relative lack of zeal of the national press in pursuing this rumor. No one has been able to get an “exclusive” interview. Kerry gets off with a “categorical” denial. Not even a “Do you even know Alex Polier?”

If nothing else, it would seem to be a story where these rumors came from. How did Kerry get connected with Polier in the first place?

As for her statement that “she figured they would see that these rumors were false and let it go,” who’s she kidding. She has a degree from Columbia and she believes that? Puhleeze!

  2. Paul says:

It seems to me that statement raises more questions than it answers. I’m very concerned.

  3. James Joyner says:

Quite so. What are they trying to hide?

  4. McGehee says:

And if they did have an affair, how did he do?

  5. Kate says:

And why didn’t they go back to the mysterious friend and find out how long she has been telling her tale?

This morning, Mr. Drum concluded that Burkett’s tale of scrubbed files was credible because he’s been peddling the same story for several years!

(Let’s apply that rationale to the inmates of a psyche ward or federal prison….)

Evidence and corroberation isn’t nearly as compelling as persistance when establishing what one should accept as truth.

Oh… wait… that’s been the backdrop music for Calpunditry for the past several days!

    My bad.

  6. phil massey says:

Hey now, no fair, We all need to drop this story. As soon as Kerry and Polier account for every minute of every day of their live so that me we might be able to categorically know for CERTAIN that they were never left unsupervised together for more than say 7 minutes. That way we’ll know nothing ever happened.

Notice, how what she said was all in the past tense, ‘Never had’ and ‘Never interned or worked’. I mean, great Scott Ott!, she completely forgot to deny it in the present time! This could be going on now!!!! NOW!!!
He could be slipping off to Kenya every night.

  7. McGehee says:

You’re right Phil. In that case we will need to see credit card records for every resident of Massachusetts as well as D.C. so we can be sure that Kerry hasn’t obtained a card under an assumed name and falsified address to pay for those Kenya flights.

If those records are not released, it will only raise more questions.

  8. Ron says:

Fellow conservatives, lend me your ear, I come not to praise Kerry but rather to point out the failing in pursuing this. The left is hyperventilating over Bush’s ANR service, for no good reason. Let’s not sink to that level.

Kerry’s voting record contains all we need. And besides, Clinton got a blow job in the Oval Office and the public said “so what”. Exactly what do you expect to happen with this?

  9. McGehee says:

Exactly what do you expect to happen with this?

Nothing but a few laughs. Why? Did it look like we were being serious? Are we too talented at imitating the Mobyists for our own good?

  10. Paul says:

Speak for yourself McGehee… I’m concerned. I’m very concerned.

ah- I can’t do it with a straight face.

  11. trey says:

    No, No, No.

You have missed the conspiracy in all this. Kerry’s camp has maintained that they could “handle these allegations” all along.

Sooo, the REAL affair wasn’t with Alex, or Alex had agreed to deny it (from Kenya) to embarrass Drudge, who was “salted” with planted, false evidence the Alex/John affair.

Then when the REAL story comes to light, Drudge is the boy who cried “wolf.”

Or maybe there is ANOTHER Alex who is really male….

  12. HH says:

Burkett has been consistent… except when he was not consistent, as noted in a post by (wait for it) Kevin Drum.

  13. only says:

So Kerry screwed around. So what? It’s only sex. Republicans need to get more nooky and stop being so moralistic. Fidelity is as outdated as religion.
