Majority Of Americans Want Independent Investigations Of Russian Election Meddling

A new poll shows a majority of Americans supporting an independent investigation of the allegations surrounding Russian interference in the 2016 election and the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia during the campaign:

A majority of voters wants an independent investigation into any connections between President Trump’s campaign and the Russian government, according to a new poll.

Fifty two percent of respondents in The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll released early Sunday are in favor an independent investigation. Roughly one-quarter of respondents, 23 percent, are opposed and 22 percent did not have an opinion.

Along party lines, pollsters found that more than three-quarters of Democrats back an independent probe, compared with one-quarter of Republicans.

Almost half of Americans, 44 percent, said they are concerned that Trump or other campaign aides had inappropriate contact with Russia, according to the poll. More than one-third, 36 percent, said they are not concerned.

Trump has said “fake news” is trying to push a narrative of collaboration between his campaign and Moscow.

“When will Sleepy Eyes Chuck Todd and @NBCNews start talking about the Obama SURVEILLANCE SCANDAL and stop with the Fake Trump/Russia story?” Trump, for example, tweeted Saturday morning.

“It is the same Fake News Media that said there is ‘no path to victory for Trump’ that is now pushing the phony Russia story. A total scam!” he added.

If nothing else, numbers like this suggest that the efforts of the Trump Administration to change the subject and undermine the investigations before they even start are not working. Clearly, the American people are hearing the news and they want answers. The question is whether Republicans on Capitol Hill will listen.

When you have a partisan split like this it means both sides at least strongly suspect that Trump is dirty. If Republicans thought Trump was innocent, more would support an investigation to prove his innocence.

So these are Republicans who at least suspect their president is in bed with a foreign dictator, but lack the honesty and patriotism to risk confronting reality.

    Republicans really are sick people.

Like the Democrats did with the Clinton illegal FOIA dodging email server, BENGHAZI!, Fast and Furious and IRS targeting investigations?

So, 8 investigations of Benghazi (sorry, I meant, BENGHAZI!!!) just were not enough for Republicans to fix the result and send Hillary to jail?

    @al-Ameda:
Congressional Investigations do not result in anything.
It took civil lawsuits to get Fast and Furious and IRS targeting documents released.

    LOL!
Then why did Republicans even bother?
I mean, I think those were sham investigations, but ….

I’ve been arguing for an independent investigation since the issue first came to light.

    Um, yes?

All of the liberals I know were, in fact, in favor of having those things investigated. And were interested in the findings. And were subsequently disgusted when Congress, not content with what had actually happened, kept trying to turn it into something they could use against their political foes.

If any Democratic president were credibly accused of any of the things it looks like Trump has been doing, I would want them investigated thoroughly, and jailed if guilty. I know that’s incomprehensible to you; don’t hurt yourself trying to grok it.
